Shadow is a Chinese film directed by Zhang Yimou. It was screened at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, and the 2018 BFI London Film Festival.
The movie tells the story of Zheng Kai, the barbaric king of Peixian, and army major Deng Chao and his “shadow”, a double that can fool the king and his enemies. When the king and Chao decide to attack the walled city of Jing a battle starts that changes the Peixian court.
The movie is a wuxia action film where we can recognize the director’s intentions to highlight the Yin and Yang philosophy showing the fight between light and darkness, peace and war, feminine and masculine. This philosophy influences the movie’s aesthetic which includes predominantly gray tones with variations around black and white.
The umbrellas, daggers, swords and armors with stunning designs that are used as weapons by the characters and warriors stand out as key elements of the movie. Furthermore, Chinese ink and typography are highlighted in the film as classic elements deeply connected to the culture.
Alejandro Robledo was in charge of doing the opening and closing credits for the film. He worked closely with the creative team at RunyouLA to find innovative solutions that better solved the problem of how to illustrate the film so that it stayed true to its concept and Chinese culture.
Alejandro explained a bit of his work saying “My main goal was to visually convey the art of calligraphy and war accompanying them with typography to resemble the essence of the film. We approached this problem from multiple angles but decided that the best solutions were clear, simulated liquids and warfare artistry. For simulated liquids I focused on employing the film’s calligraphy as a container for ink to flow through. Then we used close up shots that made the ink fluctuate between black and white. The reasoning behind this was that doing this would allow us to show the contrast between light and dark from the film. It was a beautiful combination of calligraphy, ink, art and meaning. For the weapons concept the development focused on applying ink to weapons as if they were an artist’s canvas. The strokes applied to the weapons were fresh, dynamic and resembled the calligraphy motions of the film. You could appreciate them carefully when visualizing the elements in macro shots. Then, when looking at them from a revealed wide lense, one could see the weapon. A trick that is meant to mirror the film’s use of umbrellas as weapons, umbrellas no one thought could be deadly, but through creative artistic warfare training the film’s soldiers utilized them as a solution to their problems. “

Otro elemento clave en la película son las armas, los guerreros usan elementos como sombrillas, dagas, espadas y armaduras con impresionantes diseños para los combates. También la tinta y tipografía China, aparecen durante la película como elemento clásico y muy propio de la cultura.
Alejandro Robledo fue contratado para hacer la primera tarjeta de cierre de la película. Trabajó en estrecha colaboración con el equipo de creativos de RunyouLA para encontrar soluciones creativas que resuelvan mejor el problema de cómo ilustrar la película con la tipografía, manteniéndose fiel a su concepto y cultura.
Alejandro explica un poco de su trabajo: “Mi objetivo principal era comunicar visualmente el arte de la caligrafía y la guerra acompañándolo con una tipografía que se asemejara a la esencia de la película. Abordamos este problema desde múltiples ángulos, y decidimos que la mejor solución era combinar líquidos simulados con el arte de la guerra. Para los líquidos simulados, me concentré en utilizar la caligrafía de las películas como un recipiente para que fluyera la tinta. Luego, se usaron tomas de primer plano que hicieron que la tinta interactuara entre blanco y negro. El razonamiento sería el contraste de luz y oscuridad de la película. Una hermosa combinación de caligrafía, tinta, flujo, arte y significado. Para el concepto de armas, el desarrollo principal se centró en aplicar tinta a las armas como si fueran lienzos de pintura. Los trazos aplicados a las armas son frescos, dinámicos y se parecen a los movimientos de caligrafía de la película. Podríamos apreciarlos cuidadosamente al visualizar los elementos en tomas macro. Luego, al mirarlos desde una lente amplia revelada, se ve la figura del arma, un truco que pretende reflejar el uso de las sombrillas de la película como armas, las cuales nadie creía que pudieran ser mortales, pero a través de la creatividad de la guerra, los soldados los usaron como solución a sus problemas. "
